On the Campaign trail ...

My name is Philip L. Stevens, Republican candidate for the 27th District House of Delegates. I reside in Grassy Meadows in Summers County with my wife Sandra. I am pro-life, pro-family values and pro-governmental reform. I am running for the office because I see unlimited potential in our state. The people, the natural resources and its beauty all make West Virginia a great place to live. We however need to make this a great place to work. By improving the economic climate, we can create growth and attract new business. This must be of the utmost priority. When we have created a climate that promotes growth in our economy, there will be more jobs, better health care and schools will begin to see an increase in enrollment instead of decline. The changes needed to fix our economy will occur slowly so our state must become financially responsible immediately. The longer we continue in the current economic direction of over taxation and lack of governmental accountability, the more difficult it will be to improve life for generations to come. Fundamental changes concerning the way our state does business are also needed. We must reign in the abuse of spending and the massive amounts of government waste we have in Charleston. Accountability for taxpayer dollars must be applied to the legislative choices made by our delegates. As a former government teacher I understand that for democracy to work we must have open debate and discussion of all important issues. It is through debate that the true character and beliefs of an individual will be seen by the public and improve West Virginia. In just this last regular session several bills dealing with tax reform, the Marriage Protection Amendment and a Parent’s Right to Know, all of which I support, were bottled up in committee and not addressed through the democratic process. The “discharge” of these, and others, were stopped by the incumbent legislators who chose the path of “doing things the way we have always done them” as opposed to what is in the best interest of the citizens of West Virginia. West Virginia is facing challenges today in many areas. Examining current events reveals the fact that our present legislature refuses to address important issues until they become a crisis. By not addressing “real tax reform”, the legislature has chosen not to help the citizens and encourage business growth. Our young people are forced to leave West Virginia in search of jobs, just as some of their parents and grandparents had to do years ago. Economic opportunities that are not found here are usually available in other states. Our youngest and brightest citizens, with great potential, are leaving West Virginia at an alarming rate. Most people realize West Virginia needs change. Now is the time. The 27th district is the place. At least one delegate of the 27th district must come from Summers County. By electing Philip Stevens, as your delegate, you will be selecting a person who will be ethical, honest, hard working and someone you can depend on to represent you the citizen on the important issues that are now being ignored. I am asking for your vote in this election. Together we can improve West Virginia.
